This Privacy Policy explains how Bug ID ("the app", "we", "us") handles information when you use the app.

Bug ID identifies insects, spiders, and similar small creatures from photos. Results are AI-assisted and are for informational purposes only.

Information We Collect

We collect information needed to operate the app, provide bug identification, support subscriptions, and improve reliability.

Photos you submit for bug identification
Optional location information if you allow location access, used to provide region-specific bug context
Identification results, including generated text such as likely species, safety notes, and confidence
App usage analytics, such as feature usage and general app events
Crash and diagnostic data, such as app version, device type, and error information
Subscription and purchase status, used to unlock Bug ID Pro and restore access
Technical identifiers, including Firebase, App Check, analytics, and subscription-related identifiers

Photos and AI Identification

When you submit a photo, the image is sent to our backend infrastructure so the app can process the identification request.

Our backend may send the image and related request data to an AI service provider, such as Anthropic, to generate the identification result.

Do not submit photos that contain sensitive personal information unless you are comfortable with that image being processed to provide the app service.

Location Data

If you allow location access, Bug ID may use your approximate or precise location to improve local context, such as whether a species is common in your area.

You can manage location permission at any time in iOS Settings.

How We Use Information

We use information to:

Identify bugs from photos you submit
Provide safety, bite, sting, habitat, and regional information
Operate subscriptions and restore purchases
Protect backend services from abuse using Firebase App Check and related security tools
Monitor app performance, crashes, and reliability
Improve the app experience and troubleshoot issues

Third-Party Services

Bug ID uses third-party services to operate the app:

Firebase / Google Cloud for backend functions, App Check, analytics, crash diagnostics, and infrastructure
Anthropic for AI-assisted image analysis and bug identification
RevenueCat for subscription status, entitlement management, and purchase restoration
Apple App Store / In-App Purchase for payment processing and subscription management

These providers may process technical information required to deliver their services, such as request metadata, identifiers, device information, diagnostics, and transaction-related records.

Payments and Subscriptions

Bug ID Pro subscriptions are processed by Apple through your Apple ID.

We do not receive or store your full payment card information.

We may receive purchase and subscription status information needed to unlock Pro features, verify access, prevent fraud, and support restore purchases.

Tracking and Advertising

Bug ID does not use third-party advertising SDKs and does not track you across apps or websites for advertising purposes.

Identifiers used by the app are used for app functionality, analytics, diagnostics, purchases, security, and service operation.

Data Retention

We retain information only as long as reasonably needed to operate the app, provide identification results, maintain security, support subscriptions, troubleshoot issues, comply with legal obligations, and resolve disputes.

Analytics, diagnostics, and provider-side records may be retained according to the settings and policies of the services we use.

You can choose whether to submit photos
You can manage camera, photo library, and location permissions in iOS Settings
You can manage subscriptions through your Apple ID settings
You can stop using the app at any time

Children's Privacy

Bug ID is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

International Processing

Your information may be processed in countries other than your country of residence, depending on where we and our service providers operate.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information processed by the app. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date on this page.
